Opiates are analgesics and drugs with sedative effects that suppress the central nervous system. The TEDS report that opiates are the primary substance of abuse and accounted for almost one fifth (19 percent) of all admissions to the abuse of alcohol treatment in 2007. Some common opiates are morphine, codeine and heroin, which heroin is the main illegal drug. According to NSDUH, there were approximately 114,000 people aged 12 or more heroin for the first time in the past 12 months in 2008. Read more…
